Israel: Iran Replaced Syria in Lebanon

Israel believed that Iran has replaced Syria in Lebanon after Damascus pulled out its troops in 2005.
A report by Israel's foreign ministry said: "Hizbullah had no intentions to take over Lebanon" during recent clashes with pro-government supporters "despite the fact that it could have (seized power) if it wanted."

"Syria, Iran, Hizbullah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad represent the five real threats to Israel's politics," it added.

The report, which came as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert stressed the importance of achieving peace with Syria, pointed to the heavy Hizbullah presence south of the Litani River and its possession of rockets, fighters, observation posts as well as intelligence in villages along the border.

The report said Iran has evidently consolidated its influence in Lebanon following Syria's withdrawal in 2005. naharnet
