France's Sarkozy eyes leftist doctor for cabinet

Right-wing president-elect Nicolas Sarkozy has asked a popular leftist politician and prominent human rights campaigner to be his foreign minister, political sources said on Monday.

Bernard Kouchner is a former Socialist health minister who co-founded the relief agency "Medecins Sans Frontieres," and it was not immediately clear if he would accept the proposal.

His appointment would represent a major surprise and could have a profound consequence on France's foreign policy.

Sarkozy takes office on Wednesday and is expected to unveil his full government at the end of this week or early next. Sarkozy's wife DID NOT VOTE on these elections
